Nathan LeopoldLeopold participated in the Stateville Penitentiary Malaria Study in 1944. For the study, Leopold was infected with malaria. Then after 33 years in prison, in the year 1958, Leopold was released from prison on parole. Later that year, he set up a foundation to aid "emotionally disturbed, retarded, or delinquent youths." However, a few months later, the state of Illinois voided the charter for the organization saying that it violated the terms of his parole.
To get away from the media, Leopold moved to Puerto Rico and ended up marrying a widow. Leopold was known as "Nate" to neighbors and co-workers. "Nate" worked as a laboratory and x-ray assistant at Castañer General Hospital in Adjuntas, Puerto Rico. During this time, he also traveled the island observing its birdlife. Checklist of Birds of Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands was published by Leopold in 1963. Leopold died from a heart-attack at age 66 in 1971.
