"Trial of the Century"Richard Loeb's family hired defense attorney Clarence Darrow. Darrow advised his clients, Loeb and Leopold, to plead guilty. He advised them of this so that they could avoid a trial by jury, which Darrow believed would result in conviction and possibly the death penalty. The judge of the case was Cook County Circuit Court Judge John R. Caverly.
OutcomeLeopold and Loeb were each sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of Bobby Franks, along with 99 years for the kidnapping.
